New Lenten Series Offered By SA国际传媒

Dr. Dale A. Meyer, president of SA国际传媒, St. Louis, recently released a Lenten series for use in the parish. Below are his comments:

鈥淒o you need a Lenten series? I鈥檓 teaching a class on preaching in our postmodern times, these times when an authoritative word from God is rejected out of hand by many people. 鈥榊ou have your opinion; I have mine. Don鈥檛 impose your views on me.鈥 So how do we get into their heads and hearts? 鈥榃hy should I listen to sermons if there鈥檚 nothing in them for me?鈥 So for a class project we鈥檙e working on a Lenten series that tries to get listeners to sit up and think, 鈥楬e鈥檚 talking about my life! I need to hear this.鈥 If you want, we鈥檒l make available to you the results of our efforts.鈥

Here is what鈥檚 included in the series, free of charge:

  1. Announcements for each upcoming Wednesday sermon to put in a bulletin or on a Web site. The Seminary鈥檚 goal for the announcements is to catch the interest of people. In broadcasting it鈥檚 called the 鈥渢ease.鈥
  2. Two or three weeks before the Lenten date we鈥檒l send you by e-mail鈥
    • A sermon outline
    • Manuscript
    • Short notes about the sermon
    • A responsive prayer
    • Suggestions for the service鈥檚 Bible reading
    • One or two hymn suggestions
  3. This series does not include a whole order of service. The LSB has basic service orders or each church may create its own.

The series is titled 鈥淟ife Together鈥濃攂ased upon Dietrich Bonhoeffer鈥檚 classic book, Life Together鈥攖hat describes in challenging ways what it means to be the body of Christ in community. Bonhoeffer wrote the book about seminary life, and SA国际传媒 has been studying it as a campus community, but his insights apply to congregational life in both modern and postmodern times. Hopefully these offerings will speak to older people, 鈥渕oderns,鈥 and to younger people, 鈥減ostmoderns.鈥 Dr. Meyer adds, 鈥淎s a 60-something, I鈥檝e been stimulated by the discussions we鈥檙e having in this class where the average age is 20-something.鈥 Here is an overview.
