Bach at the Sem concert set for Dec. 11

Bach at the Sem enters its 24th season Sunday, Dec. 11, at [1] with a selection of works by J.S. Bach performed by the American Kantorei under Music Director Dr. Maurice Boyer.

The concert will feature two complete cantatas 鈥 BWV 121 鈥淐hristum wir sollen loben schon鈥 and BWV 147 鈥淗erz und Mund und Tat und Leben,鈥 containing the beloved 鈥淛esus, Joy of man鈥檚 desiring鈥; the soprano title aria, 鈥淪眉sser Trost, mein Jesus k枚mmt,鈥 from BWV 151; and the Sinfonia from BWV 182 鈥淗immelsk枚nig, sei willkommen.鈥

鈥淭he thread running through this program is that of John the Baptist鈥檚 joyful leap in his mother鈥檚 womb and his later call to 鈥榩repare the way of the Lord,鈥欌 Boyer said. 鈥淚n these cantatas, one experiences a stirring call to wakefulness to the healing wonder and mystery of the Incarnation from which flows great consolation and abiding joy. As ever, Bach astonishes in his ability to create a sonic world that embodies the breadth of human emotion and experience from deep longing to true comfort to ecstatic joy.鈥

Another concert is planned for May 7, 2017, which will celebrate the Feast of Easter with three complete cantatas: BWV 6 鈥淏leib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden鈥; BWV 104 鈥淒u Hirte Israel, h枚re!鈥; and BWV 42 鈥淎m Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats.鈥
