For centuries\, going abroad has been a central mission endeavor of the Christian church 鈥� and The Lutheran Church鈥擬issouri Synod (LCMS) continues to faithfully participate in that global mission. However\, shifting immigration patterns have opened new doors for outreach. The U.S. itself has become a mission field\, as many immigrants arrive not only to receive the Gospel\, but also to proclaim it. These brothers and sisters from the Global South bring with them vibrant faith and a passion for sharing Christ. How\, then\, can our LCMS congregations engage in meaningful outreach alongside these mission-minded partners 鈥� reaching into the diverse neighborhoods of our own nation with the love and truth of Jesus? \n\n\n\n\nDr. Ely Prieto\nAssociate Professor of Practical Theology\, Associate Dean of Urban and Cross-Cultural Ministry\, Director of the Center for Hispanic Studies\, and Lutheran Foundation Professor of Urban and Cross-Cultural Ministry\nDr. Ely Prieto is associate professor of Practical Theology\, the Lutheran Foundation Professor of Urban and Cross-Cultural Ministry\, associate dean for Urban and Cross-Cultural Ministry and director of the Center for Hispanic Studies at Concordia\, Seminary\, St. Louis. DESCRIPTION:And He Spoke Many Things to Them in Parables\nThe parables of Jesus are among the most beloved passages of Scripture yet are notoriously difficult to interpret. What\, exactly\, are these parables? Are they 鈥渆arthly stories with a heavenly meaning鈥�? How should we read and apply them faithfully as Christians in our lives today? This workshop will first explore what kind of stories parables are. Then\, we will construct a method for reading them that is faithful to their literary form and that all God鈥檚 people can use. DESCRIPTION:The Book of Psalms and the Christ\nOur Lord often quoted the Psalms and said that they testify about Him (Luke 24:27; John 5:39). In doing so\, Jesus confirmed the Psalter鈥檚 prophetic witness about Himself as Israel鈥檚 coming Messiah. In this workshop\, we will consider how the Psalter鈥檚 arrangement contributes to the Psalms鈥� rich picture of the Christ as Triumphant King\, Royal Son\, Suffering Servant\, Priestly Mediator and Leader of Praise to the Father. We also will explore some of the manifold ways we hear Christ speaking in the Psalms as He identifies with sinners\, announces God鈥檚 grace to them and enjoins them to join Him in prayer\, praise and thanksgiving to God. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Adam Hensley\nAssociate Professor of Exegetical Theology\nDr. Adam Hensley is associate professor of Exegetical Theology at SA国际传媒\, St. Louis. Previously\, he served as professor at Australian Lutheran College (ALC) in North Adelaide\, South Australia (SA)\, Australia\, a college of the University of Divinity (2017-22)\, where he taught in the area of Old Testament studies and served as dean of chapel. A Greek Immersion Workshop\nThis workshop is designed to increase fluency in reading the New Testament in Greek by giving students experience listening to and speaking Koine Greek. It is similar to an 鈥渋mmersion experience鈥� in modern languages. The course assumes that the students have learned Koine Greek at some point\, but their Greek may be rusty. The workshop also is appropriate for those whose Greek is in good shape but who want to get even better at it. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Maxwell\nProfessor of Systematic Theology\, Chairman of the Department of Systematic Theology\, and Louis A. Fincke and Anna B. Shine Professor of Systematic Theology\nDr. David R. Maxwell is the Louis A. Fincke and Anna B. Shine Professor of Systematic Theology at SA国际传媒\, St. Louis. His primary research interest is the early church\, particularly the Christological controversies of the fourth through sixth centuries. He also works in the field of patristic exegesis and recently produced a translation of 鈥淐yril of Alexandria鈥檚 Commentary on John鈥� (InterVarsity Press)\, as well as 鈥淐yril of Alexandria鈥檚 Commentaries on Romans\, 1-2 Corinthians and Hebrews鈥� (InterVarsity Press). DESCRIPTION:It Stands Written: The New Testament Appropriation of the Old Testament\nChrist and the apostles regularly ground their teaching upon the Word of the Lord given through Moses and the prophets. While the fulfillment of prophecy is regularly cited in the New Testament\, that is not the only dynamic. At times\, the language of Old Testament texts is significantly transformed in New Testament texts. Then\, there are allusions and echoes of Old Testament texts within the New Testament that stop short of direct quotation yet build on the prior text. We will explore the various dynamics of the New Testament鈥檚 use of the Old Testament\, consider the Christological significance of those dynamics and reflect on how our interpretive practice can reflect those dynamics. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Kevin Golden\nAssociate Professor of Exegetical Theology\, Dean of Ministerial Formation\, and Director of Resident Field Education\nDr. Kevin Golden is associate professor of Exegetical Theology\, dean of Theological Research and Publication\, and director of Resident Field Education at SA国际传媒\, St. Louis. However\, shifting immigration patterns have opened new doors for outreach.
