DESCRIPTION:The Epistle of James and its Importance for the Lutheran Church\nA singular concentration on Luther鈥檚 criticism of James as 鈥渁n epistle of straw鈥� has caused many to overlook the epistle as a source of Luther鈥檚 theology. A closer look at Luther鈥檚 sermons and writings\, however\, suggests that Luther鈥檚 theology was shaped by the Book of James and that Luther鈥檚 faithful reading of Scripture led his students and theological heirs to follow his biblical interpretation and to preach this disputed letter fruitfully for the church. \nThis workshop offers a study of the Book of James based on the Lutheran exegetical tradition in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. With attention to the epistle itself\, we will consider why James was important to the Lutheran church in the 16th and 17th centuries\, and why it is still important for us today. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Jason Lane\nAssociate Professor of Historical Theology\, and Director of Research\, Assessment and Academic Programming\nDr. Jason Lane is associate professor of Historical Theology and the director of research\, assessment and academic programming at SA国际传媒\, St. Louis. For centuries\, going abroad has been a central mission endeavor of the Christian church 鈥� and The Lutheran Church鈥擬issouri Synod (LCMS) continues to faithfully participate in that global mission. However\, shifting immigration patterns have opened new doors for outreach. The U.S. itself has become a mission field\, as many immigrants arrive not only to receive the Gospel\, but also to proclaim it. These brothers and sisters from the Global South bring with them vibrant faith and a passion for sharing Christ. Not clergy\, religious schools\, youth ministers\, neighborhoods\, Sunday school\, mission trips\, service projects\, summer campus\, peers or the media. DESCRIPTION:And He Spoke Many Things to Them in Parables\nThe parables of Jesus are among the most beloved passages of Scripture yet are notoriously difficult to interpret. What\, exactly\, are these parables? Are they 鈥渆arthly stories with a heavenly meaning鈥�? How should we read and apply them faithfully as Christians in our lives today? This workshop will first explore what kind of stories parables are. Then\, we will construct a method for reading them that is faithful to their literary form and that all God鈥檚 people can use. Finally\, we will apply the method and walk through multiple parables together to see how Jesus uses this literary form to teach us more about who He is and what it means to belong to His kingdom. \n\n\n\n\nDr. James Fickenscher\nAssistant professor of Exegetical Theology\nDr. James Fickenscher is assistant professor of Exegetical Theology at SA国际传媒\, St. Louis. DESCRIPTION:The Book of Psalms and the Christ\nOur Lord often quoted the Psalms and said that they testify about Him (Luke 24:27; John 5:39). In doing so\, Jesus confirmed the Psalter鈥檚 prophetic witness about Himself as Israel鈥檚 coming Messiah. In this workshop\, we will consider how the Psalter鈥檚 arrangement contributes to the Psalms鈥� rich picture of the Christ as Triumphant King\, Royal Son\, Suffering Servant\, Priestly Mediator and Leader of Praise to the Father. We also will explore some of the manifold ways we hear Christ speaking in the Psalms as He identifies with sinners\, announces God鈥檚 grace to them and enjoins them to join Him in prayer\, praise and thanksgiving to God. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Adam Hensley\nAssociate Professor of Exegetical Theology\nDr. Adam Hensley is associate professor of Exegetical Theology at SA国际传媒\, St. Louis. Previously\, he served as professor at Australian Lutheran College (ALC) in North Adelaide\, South Australia (SA)\, Australia\, a college of the University of Divinity (2017-22)\, where he taught in the area of Old Testament studies and served as dean of chapel. He is known internationally for his work on covenant theology in the Psalms and is currently working on a commentary on Psalms 101-150. A Greek Immersion Workshop\nThis workshop is designed to increase fluency in reading the New Testament in Greek by giving students experience listening to and speaking Koine Greek. The workshop also is appropriate for those whose Greek is in good shape but who want to get even better at it. \n\n\n\n\nDr. David Maxwell\nProfessor of Systematic Theology\, Chairman of the Department of Systematic Theology\, and Louis A. Fincke and Anna B. Shine Professor of Systematic Theology\nDr. David R. Maxwell is the Louis A. Fincke and Anna B. Shine Professor of Systematic Theology at SA国际传媒\, St. Louis. His primary research interest is the early church\, particularly the Christological controversies of the fourth through sixth centuries. He also works in the field of patristic exegesis and recently produced a translation of 鈥淐yril of Alexandria鈥檚 Commentary on John鈥� (InterVarsity Press)\, as well as 鈥淐yril of Alexandria鈥檚 Commentaries on Romans\, 1-2 Corinthians and Hebrews鈥� (InterVarsity Press). DESCRIPTION:It Stands Written: The New Testament Appropriation of the Old Testament\nChrist and the apostles regularly ground their teaching upon the Word of the Lord given through Moses and the prophets. While the fulfillment of prophecy is regularly cited in the New Testament\, that is not the only dynamic. At times\, the language of Old Testament texts is significantly transformed in New Testament texts. Then\, there are allusions and echoes of Old Testament texts within the New Testament that stop short of direct quotation yet build on the prior text. We will explore the various dynamics of the New Testament鈥檚 use of the Old Testament\, consider the Christological significance of those dynamics and reflect on how our interpretive practice can reflect those dynamics. \n\n\n\n\nDr. Kevin Golden\nAssociate Professor of Exegetical Theology\, Dean of Ministerial Formation\, and Director of Resident Field Education\nDr. Kevin Golden is associate professor of Exegetical Theology\, dean of Theological Research and Publication\, and director of Resident Field Education at SA国际传媒\, St. Louis.
