Dr. David R. Schmitt is the Gregg H. Benidt Memorial Professor of Homiletics and Literature, and professor of Practical Theology at SA国际传媒, St. Louis.
He became a faculty member in 1995.
His interests and areas of expertise include preaching, the intersections of faith and culture, particularly literary culture, spiritual autobiography and the devotional life.
He received his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in English at Washington University in St. Louis (2005); his Master of Arts (M.A.) in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1990); and Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from SA国际传媒 (1988). He holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Concordia College in Ann Arbor, Mich. (now Concordia University, Ann Arbor) (1984).
Schmitt served as pastor at Saint John the Divine Lutheran Church in Chicago, Ill., from 1990-1995.
His most recent published works include 鈥淗oly Wonder: The Experience of Beauty and Credal Contemplation,鈥 鈥淐oncordia Journal鈥 (summer 2022) and 鈥淒evotion and Discipleship in a Discontented Age,鈥 鈥淐oncordia Journal鈥 (fall 2020). He has written several devotional Hymn of the Day Studies for 鈥淲ord in Song鈥 (The Lutheran Church鈥擬issouri Synod, 2017) and devotional booklets, including 鈥淛ustice, Kindness, Humility鈥 (2015) and 鈥淢an of God: Strong to Serve鈥 (2013). His published works also include 鈥淒evotion and Community: Thresholds of Faith,鈥 鈥淚nviting Community鈥 (SA国际传媒 Press, 2013); 鈥淗eroic Deeds of Conscience: Milton鈥檚 Stand against Religious Conformity in Paradise Regained,鈥 鈥淗untington Library Quarterly 76.1鈥 (spring 2013); 鈥淟aw and Gospel in Sermon and Service,鈥 in 鈥淧reaching Is Worship: The Sermon in Context鈥 (Concordia Publishing House [CPH], 2011); 鈥淭he Tapestry of Preaching鈥 鈥淐oncordia Journal 37.2鈥 (2011); and 鈥淩ichard Caemmerer鈥檚 Goal, Malady, Means: A Retrospective Glance鈥 鈥淐oncordia Theological Quarterly鈥 (2010). He has written devotional booklets, including 鈥淪trong in the Lord鈥 (2010) and 鈥淏lessed for Life鈥 (2009).
Forthcoming work includes two book projects: 鈥淏eholding the Sacred: Using Images in Preaching鈥 to be published by CPH and 鈥淭he Pilgrimage of Preaching,鈥 a homiletics text on the art of preaching. He also is editor of a series of preaching texts in 鈥淐onversations in Preaching鈥 (SA国际传媒 Press), which include Dr. Dean Nadasdy鈥檚 鈥淭he Beautiful Sermon鈥 and Dr. David Peter鈥檚 鈥淥pening the Scriptures.鈥
In addition to his Seminary work, he is a contributor to 鈥淪ermon Structures鈥 on concordiatheology.org, serves on the Concordia Pulpit Resources advisory board, hosts 鈥淧reacher鈥檚 Studio鈥 video interviews on concordiatheology.org, regularly writes for the 鈥淐raft of Preaching鈥 blog posts for 1517 and is a board member and contributor to the Preach the Word project for The Lutheran Church鈥擬issouri Synod. He and Dr. Peter Nafzger also host the Seminary鈥檚 weekly podcast 鈥淟ectionary Kick-start.鈥
Apart from his Seminary work, he enjoys racquetball and exercise.
