Inaugural title centers on image, aesthetics in preaching
Lutheran theologian and scholar Dr. Dean聽Nadasdy聽advocates for the artfulness of preaching in聽The Beautiful Sermon: Image and the Aesthetics of Preaching,聽the first title in聽The聽Conversations in Preaching聽Series聽from SA国际传媒 Press, the publishing arm of聽SA国际传媒, St. Louis.
鈥淓ach book in the series will take up one topic relevant to the preaching task and begin a conversation. At the heart of the conversation will be a Lutheran sensibility of preaching,鈥� said聽Dr. David Schmitt,聽the editor of the series and the聽Seminary鈥檚聽Gregg H.聽Benidt聽Memorial Professor of Homiletics and Literature.聽鈥淧reaching is the authoritative public proclamation of the faith, normed and guided by the Scriptures, centered in the聽Gospel of Jesus Christ for forgiveness, life聽and salvation, for the benefit of the hearers in their relationship to God and to others.鈥�
滨苍听The Beautiful Sermon,聽Nadasdy聽sets preaching in the context of aesthetic theology. He highlights preachers聽who have contributed significantly to aesthetic theology聽such as聽Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Martin聽Luther聽and Jonathan Edwards.聽Nadasdy聽explores seven elements that contribute to the beautiful sermon and聽the聽various approaches to using images in preaching.聽He includes three sermons,聽with commentary,聽to聽illustrate the power of imagery聽in sermons聽to carry truth and provide beauty. Throughout the book, beautiful works of art are聽included聽to display聽their聽powerful聽impact on preaching.
